Am I eligible?

The criteria for becoming a certified motorcycle instructor are as follows:

• you must be over 21 years of age

• you must have held a full British motorcycle licence (Category A) for a period of no less than three years

• you must be considered a ‘fit & proper’ person in respect of convictions motoring or non-motoring

Only if you meet the above criteria can you apply for a instructor certificate. The DSA will run CRB checks and may decline an application if these criteria are not met.  

Initial assessment

We offer a FREE initial assessment for anyone who wants to become a DSA Approved Motorcycle Instructor. This FREE assessment of your riding looks closely at your motorcycle skills and gives both the course instructor and you, the "potential instructor" a chance to explore the different aspects of motorcycle training and what is involved in becoming and instructor in more detail. The assessment consists of an off and on road assessment of your riding ability. An assessment of your current knowledge of motorcycle training and a look at your eligibility for the course is also included.

Down trained Opportunities

Once you have completed our FREE assessment we may then offer you a "Down trained" position. This will be a temporary, part time position that will enable you to prepare for you Instructor Exam.

What do I need to bring

It is important that all parties attending supply their own road legal motorcycle, safety helmet, high visibility jacket and appropriate clothing. A full UK motorcycle licence must be presented at the start of the FREE assessment and may be asked for again at a later date. If a counterpart licence is being provide both card and paper part must be available to the instructor. Old style licenses must be presented alongside a valid UK Passport. An expired licence of passport will not be accepted.
